Michael Palace is an Associate Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), affiliated with the Earth Systems Research Center. He specializes in environmental science, focusing on terrestrial carbon cycles, vegetation dynamics, and remote sensing. His work integrates field measurements, geospatial tools, and satellite imagery to study forest dynamics, disease prediction, and archaeological landscape analysis. Palace leads UNH's Environmental Science undergraduate program and the Graduate Geospatial Science Certificate Program. He has secured funding from NASA, NSF, USAID, and others for over ten projects, including UAS development for global fieldwork. Previously, he served as affiliate faculty at the University of Brasilia, mentoring Brazilian PhD students. Palace is an active speaker and educator, teaching courses in geospatial science, remote sensing, and tropical ecology. He contributes to scientific communities via conference leadership, journal reviews, and panel roles at NASA/NSF/DOE. Beyond academia, Palace produces electronic music under 'horchata' and explores interdisciplinary projects like real-time dancer movement-to-music conversion using modified sensors.
- Education: Ph.D. Natural Resources Management (UNH), M.S. Environmental Science (UVa), B.A. Archaeology/Environmental Science (UVa)
- Research Interests: Remote Sensing, Tropical Forestry, Terrestrial Carbon Cycle
His research emphasizes innovative methods like UAS technology for ecological monitoring and permafrost thaw studies. Recent projects include methane emission tracking in subarctic peatlands and lake-based fire history calibration in Amazonia. Palace's work bridges environmental science with creative arts, showcasing interdisciplinary approaches to complex problems.
