Prof. Dr. med. Michael Orth is a Senior Scientist at the University Hospital of Old Age Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University of Bern, and Head of Neurozentrum Siloah in Bern, Switzerland. His academic career spans prestigious institutions including Ulm University, Hamburg University, and University College London, with expertise in neurology and psychiatry.
Orth's research focuses on Huntington's Disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and neurological genetics. His work encompasses molecular mechanisms of disease pathogenesis, genetic modifiers of disease onset and progression, and clinical trial development for therapeutic interventions. He has made significant contributions to understanding the role of CAG repeats in Huntington's Disease and the identification of genetic factors that modify clinical presentation.
His publication record demonstrates a consistent trajectory of high-impact research, with numerous publications in leading journals including Cell, Nature Genetics, and the American Journal of Human Genetics. His recent work has centered on genetic modifiers of somatic expansion in Huntington's Disease, posttranscriptional regulation mechanisms, and biomarker development for disease progression.
As Science Manager of the European Huntington's Disease Network from 2008-2019, Orth played a pivotal role in coordinating international research efforts. His clinical expertise includes specialization in Huntington's Disease and Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome, with positions at major neurological centers including The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London.
Orth maintains active research collaborations through the Genetic Modifiers of Huntington's Disease (GeM-HD) Consortium and continues to lead clinical and translational research efforts at the University of Bern, focusing on improving understanding and treatment of neurodegenerative conditions.
