Michael Nydegger is an Associate Professor of Chemistry-II at Spring Arbor University (SAU), where he has served since 2017. He concurrently chairs both the Chemistry and Physics departments. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Iowa and an M.S. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dr. Nydegger's research focuses on physical chemistry, particularly in spectroscopic techniques like vibrational spectroscopy and surface analysis, alongside contributions to chemistry education through innovative experiments and pedagogical studies.
His research portfolio includes studies on reaction kinetics, molecular dynamics, and material surface characterization using advanced spectroscopic methods. Notable work involves two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2DIR), tribonucleation phenomena, and vibrational relaxation processes. Nydegger's educational contributions include developing hands-on experiments for undergraduate chemistry education, such as analyzing emulsion activation energy and soda geyser mechanisms.
Outside academia, Nydegger is actively involved in the Spring Arbor community, attending Falling Waters Bible Church and emphasizing outdoor activities like hiking and boating.
