Dr. Michael Nieves is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Mathematics at Keele University's School of Computer Science and Mathematics, and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow. His research focuses on applied mathematics, solid mechanics, and metamaterials, with emphasis on wave propagation, fracture mechanics, and asymptotic analysis. He earned a first-class Master of Mathematics (2005) and PhD (2007) from the University of Liverpool, where he later became an Honorary Fellow.
Research interests include asymptotic analysis of boundary value problems, gyro-elastic metamaterials for earthquake protection, and dynamic fracture in flexural systems. He leads projects like EFFECTFACT (€1.82M, 2021-2025), advancing matrix Wiener-Hopf techniques, and CAT-FFLAP (€168k, 2017-2019), designing metamaterials for civil engineering resilience.
- Grants: European Commission-funded projects on mathematical modeling and metamaterials.
- Awards: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship, Honorary Fellow (University of Liverpool).
Teaching includes postgraduate supervision and module leadership in applied mathematics and analytical functions. He also delivered specialized courses on Wiener-Hopf techniques at the University of Cambridge.
Active in the Centre for Mathematics Research, his work bridges pure and applied analysis, with applications in materials science and engineering.
