Nadia Kanwal is a Senior Lecturer in Computing at Keele University’s School of Computer Science and Mathematics. She holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Essex (2013) and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellowship (2018–2022). As Program Director of the Data Science Apprenticeship Degree Program, she focuses on bridging academic and industry needs in computing education.
Her research spans Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Data Security, with emphasis on privacy-preserving surveillance systems, healthcare applications, and ethical AI. Notable projects include:
- Developing secure video storage systems with EU-funded grants (€256,200)
- Leading projects on federated learning for emotion recognition via smart clothing (€77,000 grant)
- Designing encryption frameworks for CCTV systems compliant with GDPR
Her work has been published in top-tier venues like IEEE Access, Applied Sciences, and Security and Communication Networks. She has supervised multiple PhD students through grants from Enterprise Ireland and the President Doctoral Scholarship program.
Recognition includes Senior Fellow status from Advance HE (2022) and IEEE Senior Membership (2019). Her recent research trends focus on: privacy-aware video analytics, AI ethics in healthcare, and edge computing for real-time surveillance.
Current grants include a £29,548 MDUK study on motor skill assessment in muscle-wasting conditions (2022) and a €15,000 feasibility grant for secured video storage systems (2020).
