Michael Morrison is a Senior Researcher in Social Science at the HeLEX Centre for Health, Law and Emerging Technologies. He holds a BSc in Biology from the University of St. Andrews (2000) and MA/PhD from the University of Nottingham’s Institute for Science and Society. His research focuses on governance challenges in biomodifying technologies, regenerative medicine, and gene editing. Morrison has led major projects like the ESRC-funded 'Biomodifying Technologies' initiative and collaborated across universities in Oxford, Sussex, York, and Japan. His work spans regulatory frameworks, patent dynamics, and public engagement in biomedical innovation.
- Education: BSc (St. Andrews), MA/PhD (Nottingham)
- Key Projects: BioGov, REALM, HEAL-HLA, EUCelLEX
- Current Roles: Senior Researcher, HeLEX Centre
Research interests include Science and Technology Studies (STS), medical sociology, and policy analysis of emerging biotechnologies. He explores how governance structures adapt to innovations like CRISPR, iPSCs, and 3D bioprinting, emphasizing ethical and societal impacts. Recent work addresses vaccine hesitancy scales (OVHS), needle experience metrics (ONE), and cross-cultural regenerative medicine readiness.
Publications analyze patent strategies (e.g., CRISPR), clinical translation pathways, and regulatory challenges in low-income countries. He advises on international data-sharing governance and dynamic consent frameworks for biobanks. Current projects include REALM (2023-2026) and HEAL (2022-2025).
Grants include ESRC funding for biomodification governance and EU projects on regenerative medicine readiness. He participates in policy briefings for institutions like the MHRA Patient Forum and RegMedNet, addressing translational research targets and personalized medicine.
