Michael Meyer

Michael Meyer is a Professor at the Institute for Nonprofit Management at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business. He has served as head of the institute since 2005 and is an academic director of WU’s Professional Master in Social Innovation and Management and the Competence Center for NPOs and Social Entrepreneurship. His research focuses on nonprofit management, civil society, and social entrepreneurship, with a particular emphasis on the diffusion of management practices into NPOs and the role of organizations in addressing societal challenges.

His recent work explores organizational practices of civil society organizations in urban regions, the impact of socioeconomic inequality on nonprofit governance, and the interplay between managerialism and societal roles of NPOs. He investigates topics such as social innovation, impact investing, and crisis response in the nonprofit sector, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. His research also addresses the development of civil society in Central and Eastern Europe.

Michael’s publications span over 20 books and 120 scholarly articles. He contributes to editorial boards of leading journals like Nonprofit Voluntary Sector Quarterly and Nonprofit Management and Leadership. His teaching portfolio includes courses on organizational behavior, leadership, and management theory at undergraduate, graduate, and executive levels. Current projects include international collaborations on civil society in urban regions (funded by FWF) and managerialism in nonprofits in Central and Eastern Europe.
