Michael McNamee

Michael McNamee is Professor of Applied Ethics at Swansea University's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences within the Sports and Exercise Sciences department. With qualifications spanning philosophy and sports sciences, he has established himself as a leading scholar in sports ethics, holding an academic office at Bay Campus in the Engineering East Building. His extensive research has positioned him at the forefront of ethical considerations in sports, with particular expertise in anti-doping, sports medicine ethics, and philosophical foundations of athletic competition.

Professor McNamee's research interests focus on the critical intersection of ethics and sport, examining issues such as integrity in competitive environments, policy development for fair play, and the philosophical underpinnings of athletic competition. His work investigates how ethical frameworks can guide decision-making in sports organizations, address emerging technological challenges in performance enhancement, and ensure equitable participation across different sporting contexts. He has particularly contributed to understanding the ethical dimensions of concussion management, Paralympic classification systems, and the complex relationship between medical practices and sporting integrity.

His recent publications reveal a strong trend toward addressing contemporary challenges in sports ethics, with significant focus on concussion research ethics, Paralympic classification fairness, women's sports eligibility, and integrity issues in high-stakes competition. These works demonstrate his commitment to bridging theoretical philosophical frameworks with practical applications in sports governance, often collaborating with medical professionals, policymakers, and sports organizations to develop evidence-based ethical guidelines.

Professor McNamee has received substantial research funding from various national research councils and the European Commission for projects spanning anti-doping ethics, eating disorders in sports, innovative sports medicine ethics, and human enhancement policy. He currently serves as Program Director for a consortium of six European Universities developing a Master's Degree in Ethics and Integrity in Sport funded by Erasmus+. His advisory work extends to major international organizations including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Clinical Ethics and Clinical Effectiveness Committees in Wales.

As a dedicated mentor, Professor McNamee supervises multiple PhD and MSc students working on diverse topics including sports integrity investigations, Paralympic classification ethics, anti-doping policies, and ethical challenges in sports technology.
