Michael McAlpine is a Senior Lecturer at Brock University's Department of Kinesiology, where he teaches the lab component of physiology courses. His research focuses on nutritional interventions for bone health, particularly the effects of tea bioactives on osteoblast mineralization and antioxidant capacity.
- Research Areas: Nutritional interventions for bone health, maternal nutrition during pregnancy/lactation, early life programming, sports nutrition, and exercise physiology
His publications highlight the role of black, green, and red rooibos teas in bone mineralization, with a dose-dependent response observed in in vitro and animal studies. He also investigates how steeping time affects polyphenol content and antioxidant properties in various teas.
McAlpine earned his PhD in Applied Health Sciences from Brock University in 2020, with a dissertation on tea-derived bioactives and lifelong bone health. He works with diverse models spanning humans, rodents, insects, and cell cultures.
