Michael Mattioli

Michael Mattioli is a Professor of Law and Louis F. Niezer Faculty Fellow at Indiana University's Maurer School of Law, where he has served on the faculty since 2012. His expertise centers on intellectual property law with specialized focus on patents, technology policy, and data governance.

His educational background includes a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (2007) and a B.S. from Tufts University (2001). Prior to law school, he worked as a microchip designer, providing practical industry experience that informs his academic work.

Professor Mattioli's research investigates how information-sharing mechanisms can enhance societal health, safety, and prosperity through cooperative technological solutions. His scholarship critically examines patent pools for digital media, cancer research data commons, and regulatory frameworks governing Big Data applications in health infrastructure. He demonstrates how intellectual property, antitrust, and privacy laws determine the success or failure of collaborative innovation initiatives.

His publication portfolio includes the co-edited MIT Press volume "Big Data Is Not a Monolith" (2016) and numerous high-impact law review articles. His recent work reveals consistent thematic focus on the intersection of emerging technologies and regulatory policy, with increasing attention to health applications, autonomous systems, and data governance challenges across multiple sectors.

His honors include Indiana University's Trustees Teaching Award (2018), alongside prestigious Microsoft Research Fellowships at Berkeley Law and Michigan Law.

Professor Mattioli actively contributes to Indiana Law's Center for IP Research and the Ostrom Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis. His teaching encompasses Contracts, Intellectual Property Survey, Trademarks, IP Transactions, and a specialized Data Law and Policy seminar that reflects his cutting-edge research agenda.
