Dr. Michael Martin is a Lecturer in Urban Design and Planning at the University of Sheffield's Department of Urban Studies and Planning, where he has been employed since September 2021. Previously, he served as Assistant Professor in Urban Design at Aalborg University (2017-2021) and worked in UK-based urban design consultancy. He holds a PhD in Urban Studies/Planning from the University of Manchester, where he also completed his master's in Urban Design and undergraduate degree in Urban Planning.
Martin's research examines urban transformation through three interconnected lenses:
- Urban Crises & Temporary Use: Analyzes post-recession land use patterns and COVID-19 responses through geospatial analysis of temporary urban interventions
- Child-friendly Cities: Develops participatory frameworks for children's play spaces using embodied cognition theories and international case studies
- Applied Urban Design: Creates context-responsive design methodologies tested through UK-Denmark collaborations
His publications demonstrate consistent focus on urban inequalities through mixed-methods approaches, with recent work examining pandemic resilience and play space accessibility. Research has been funded by ESRC, LEGO Foundation, and Henrik Frode Obel Foundation.
Awards:
• Teacher of the Year (Aalborg University, 2019)
Martin leads modules in urban design principles, development planning, and informality, employing studio-based pedagogy.
