Michael Mann

Dr. Michael Mann is a Professor of Surgery in the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He maintains clinical offices at both the main UCSF campus (500 Parnassus Ave) and the Thoracic Surgery & Oncology Program (1600 Divisadero St.). His academic work spans thoracic oncology and cardiovascular surgery with a strong translational research focus.

Dr. Mann earned his AB in Chemistry from Princeton University (1985), followed by his MD from Stanford University School of Medicine (1991). He completed residencies in General Surgery at Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women's Hospital (2001) and Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCSF (2003). He is board certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

His research interests center on developing molecular therapies targeting specific cells involved in disease, particularly in cancer metastasis and heart failure. The Cardiothoracic Translational Research Laboratory, which he directs, focuses on translating molecular understanding of cancer and heart failure into novel cellular and molecular therapies. His work bridges clinical practice with basic science, investigating metastasis mechanisms and developing molecular interventions to complement surgical approaches.

Dr. Mann's recent publications demonstrate his leadership in molecular risk stratification for lung cancer, particularly using a 14-gene assay to guide treatment decisions. His research spans from fundamental molecular biology of metastasis to clinical trials evaluating molecularly-guided adjuvant chemotherapy, with consistent focus on improving outcomes for thoracic cancer patients.

Dr. Mann has served as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded projects including studies on ERK signaling in chronic heart failure (2005-2017) and S1P signaling in cardiac remodeling (2006-2012). His laboratory investigates the molecular basis of metastasis through analysis of human tumor specimens and develops novel approaches combining surgical techniques with molecular interventions.
