Michael Manga is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on geological processes shaping Earth's surface, including volcanism, groundwater interactions, and planetary geology. He has held prestigious roles such as the Judy Webb Chair of Physical Sciences and the Freedman Chair in Education, and currently serves as Department Chair.
- Education: B.Sc. in Geophysics from McGill University (1990), S.M. in Engineering Sciences from Harvard University (1992), Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Harvard University (1994).
His research spans volcanology, seismology, and planetary science, investigating volcanic eruptions, earthquake-fluid interactions, and cryovolcanism on Mars and icy moons. Recent work involves machine learning for eruption forecasting and sediment analysis in volcanic fields.
Notable scientific awards include the MacArthur Fellowship (2005), National Academy of Sciences membership (2018), and the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Research Award (2021). He has led initiatives like the CONVERSE Center and participated in large-scale projects such as IODP Expedition 398.
