Michael Lyvers is an Associate Professor at Bond University's Faculty of Society & Design, where he has been a faculty member since 1995. He teaches courses in Biological Psychology, Drugs and Behaviour, Psychopharmacology, and other psychology-related subjects. Previously, he taught at UCLA, California State University Northridge, and the University of Maryland European Division.

His research focuses on psychophysiology, psychopharmacology, and neuroscience, particularly the relationship between prefrontal cortical functioning and substance abuse/dependence, mediated by traits like impulsivity, reward sensitivity, and alexithymia. Recent collaborative work with Dr. Mark Edwards explores anxiety, attention, and cognition. His publications emphasize alcohol use, binge eating, dreaming, and interoceptive awareness, often linking these to mental health and neurobiological mechanisms.
Dr. Lyvers has secured significant grants, including the 2025 FSD Research Project Grant for studying childhood adversity and the autism spectrum in relation to alexithymia, alcohol use, and binge eating. He actively supervises HDR students on projects examining personality traits, neuropsychological functioning, and substance use. His affiliations include a JSPS Research Fellowship at Kwansei Gakuin University and a Visiting Scholar position at Oxford University.
