Michael Lee is a Professor in the Department of Communication at the College of Charleston. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Minnesota and has been teaching since 2002, specializing in political communication, rhetoric, and persuasion. His scholarly work has earned national recognition, including five national book awards.

Dr. Lee's research centers on political communication and rhetorical strategies in American politics, particularly focusing on political branding, identity formation, and strategic audience positioning. He is the author of the award-winning book Creating Conservatism: Postwar Words that Made an American Movement and the recent We Are Not One People: Separatism and Secession in American Politics Since 1776, both reflecting deep engagement with political discourse and ideological development.
His scholarly contributions have been recognized with over a dozen awards, including five national book awards for his groundbreaking first book. These accolades highlight the impact and rigor of his research within the field of communication and political rhetoric.
Dr. Lee regularly teaches courses in public speaking, argumentation, persuasive messaging, political campaigns, media and politics, and citizenship. He has extensive experience in online education and is frequently invited to speak about his research at universities across the country, demonstrating his active role in academic and public discourse.
