Michael Law-Smith is an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law (Common Law Section). His research and teaching focus on criminal law and procedure, with an emphasis on intersections with political and legal philosophy, alongside significant interests in evidence law and tort law.

His work critically examines issues such as mass incarceration, algorithmic sentencing, criminal trials, and prosecutorial misconduct. He is actively engaged in interdisciplinary research bridging legal analysis with philosophical inquiry.
Professor Law-Smith has been recognized as a Silver Medallist at the University of Toronto and has held a visiting position at Harvard Law School.
He serves as a judicial law clerk to Chief Justice Richard Wagner at the Supreme Court of Canada (2023-24) and is a member of the Bar of Ontario. His publications are featured in the McGill Law Journal and the Journal of Legal Philosophy.
