Michael Larsen is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Department of Clinical Medicine. He has been a Full Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology since 2007, following his tenure as Associate Professor from 1996-2006. His primary clinical appointment is at the Department of Ophthalmology at Herlev/Glostrup Hospitals in Copenhagen.
Dr. Larsen's research focuses on retinal diseases, particularly medical and laser therapy of retinopathy, hereditary diseases of the retina, choroid and optic nerve, and physiological optics using non-invasive examination methods. His work spans experimental photochemistry, photolysis, and controlled clinical intervention trials for conditions including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and retinitis pigmentosa.
His recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate continued research activity across multiple subfields of ophthalmology, with particular emphasis on biomarker discovery for retinal diseases, advanced imaging techniques using optical coherence tomography, and genetic studies of retinal conditions. His work shows strong translational focus with applications in both diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Larsen has supervised 25 PhD students and 40 project students throughout his career. He has been involved in significant commercial-academic partnerships, including projects with Torsana Diabetes Diagnostics A/S (later RetinaLyze A/S) from 1998-2003 that led to the spin-out of Visiopharm A/S, and a project with NKT Photonics from 2007-2011 that contributed to the development of SuperK supercontinuum lasers.
His educational background includes an MD from the University of Copenhagen (1977-1985) and a Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc/dr.med.) from the same institution in 1993. He became a Consultant Ophthalmologist specializing in Medical Retina at Herlev/Glostrup Hospitals in 1999, and served as Interim Chairman of the National Eye Clinic in Copenhagen from 2006-2008, followed by a role as Clinical Research Consultant at the National Eye Clinic starting in 2008.
