Michael Kwakkelstein is a Professor of Art History at Utrecht University and Director of the Netherlands Interuniversity Institute for Art History in Florence. He specializes in Italian Renaissance art, particularly the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. His research focuses on the relationship between art theory and artistic practice, with a focus on anatomical drawings, portraiture, and classical influences. He holds a PhD from Leiden University (1994) and has held academic roles at the University of Amsterdam, Teylers Museum, and Florence's ISI Palazzo Rucellai.
