Dr Michael Kranert is an Associate Professor in Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton, specializing in discourse analysis across political and institutional contexts. He currently serves as Director of Programmes for Undergraduate Degrees in Modern Languages and Linguistics, while also holding editorial roles as Associate Editor of Humanities & Social Sciences Communications and the Palgrave book series Postdisciplinary Studies in Discourse. As Treasurer of DiscourseNet, he actively participates in international discourse scholarship.
- Research Focus: Comparative political discourse analysis between English and German-speaking countries, institutional discourses, and language ideologies in political contexts.
- Current Projects: Investigating language use in local politics and devolved government, analyzing differences from national-level discourse and their impact on climate change policy-making.
- Teaching: Modules on Language and Society in the German-Speaking World, Language and the City, and Language Power and Institutions.
- Collaborations: Working with Professor Nisreen Alwan, Emeritus Professor Sarah Nield, and Professor Dianna Smith on public health discourse analysis related to food insecurity and resilience.
