Michael Kopsidis

Prof. Dr. Michael Kopsidis is an Adjunct Professor at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Deputy Head of the Department of Agricultural Markets at the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO), where he has been a senior researcher since 1995. His academic work bridges economic history, agricultural development, and transition economics with regional expertise in Southeast/East Europe and Germany.

Education: He holds a PhD in Economic History from the University of Münster (thesis: "Market Integration and Development of Westphalian Agriculture 1780-1880") and completed his habilitation at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in 2008, receiving the venia legendi for Economic and Social History.

Research Focus: Kopsidis investigates long-term agricultural transformations, market integration, and industrialization patterns since 1750. His work employs historical and institutional economics frameworks to analyze development pathways in European peripheries.
