Michael Kohlhase is a Professor for Knowledge Representation and Processing at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), Germany, and an adjunct associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), USA. His research focuses on knowledge representation for STEM, inference-based natural language processing, and computer-supported education. He leads the KWARC (Knowledge Adaptation and Reasoning for Content) research group, known for developing semantic web technologies and formal mathematics systems like OMDoc and MMT.
Education: PhD in Computer Science (1994, Saarland University), Habilitation (1999, Saarland University). Postdoctoral positions included a Heisenberg Stipend at CMU (2000–2003).
Research Interests: Modular foundations of knowledge representation, large-scale document analysis, semantic technologies for education, and formal mathematics. Key projects include the MathML Association, OpenMath Society, and the Planetary System for collaborative STEM publishing.
Awards: Best paper awards at CICM 2015/2014, Heisenberg Stipend (2000–2003), AKI Prize for Dissertation (1996).
Grants and Roles: Deputy Speaker of FAU's Research Data Initiative, Member of the MathML Association Board. Supervised over 20 PhD students, including notable alumni such as Dennis Müller and Mihnea Iancu.
