Michael Kanost serves as University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics at Kansas State University's College of Arts and Sciences. His laboratory investigates insect biochemistry with emphasis on immunity, cuticle formation, and iron homeostasis using Manduca sexta as primary model organism.
His research spans three interconnected domains:
- Insect immunity focusing on protease cascades, melanization pathways, and antimicrobial responses
- Cuticle biochemistry examining sclerotization processes and exoskeleton mechanical properties
- Iron homeostasis mechanisms including transferrin function and metal transport
Publications since 2015 demonstrate consistent contributions to insect immunology, with recent emphasis on protease network dynamics (2022-2025), iron metabolism (2022-2024), and translational applications in antimicrobial development (2023).
