Dr. Michael Joseph is an Assistant Professor in Black British History and Fellow of Gonville and Caius College at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on modern Caribbean, British, and French history, with a current book project comparing anti-colonial political thought across Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados, Martinique, and Guadeloupe (1880s–1930s). He also explores the Caribbean diaspora and Black European Studies.
Education: BA, MSc, and DPhil from the University of Oxford, followed by a Junior Research Fellowship at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, before joining Cambridge in 2021.
Teaching roles include co-convening undergraduate courses like O7: Modern Britain and Ireland (1750–present) and S12: Becoming Black Britain (source-based paper on Black British art/culture). He also contributes to postgraduate programs in Modern British History, including a specialized course on 'Modern Britain and the Caribbean.'
Research collaborations include co-convening the Modern British History seminar and participating in the NYCTC reading group with scholars from Cambridge, Columbia, and NYU. His work has been recognized with the French History Article Prize (2021) for research on race, gender, labor, and politics in the early 20th-century Caribbean.
