Michael Jones serves as a Senior Industry Research Fellow and deputy-director of the Centre for Advanced Defence Structures and Materials Experimentation at RMIT University. His work focuses on critical defense-related structural testing and analysis for military aircraft systems.
His research interests include:
- Aerospace Engineering and Aircraft Structural Integrity
- Large-Scale Structural Testing methodologies
- Aircraft Fatigue analysis and Materials Characterisation
- Extreme Environment Testing procedures
- Advanced Fracture Mechanics and Quantitative Fractography
- Application of machine learning to small fatigue crack growth
Mr. Jones has extensive experience collaborating with the Defence Science and Technology Group on major structural tests including:
- Hawk Mk.127 lead-in-fighter full-scale fatigue test
- PC-9 enhanced teardown analysis
- Swiss F/A-18 centre barrel full-scale damage tolerance test
- F/A-18 spindle component testing
- Validation and verification support for F-35 full-scale fatigue tests
He is currently supervising research projects including 'Durability of Hybrid Airframe Structure' (scheduled for June 2025) and 'Plausibility Study of a Tethered Drone surveillance enhancement capability for RAN Ships' (scheduled for June 2025).
