Dr. Michael J. Ross is a Professor of Medicine and Developmental & Molecular Biology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and serves as Chief of the Division of Nephrology. He holds leadership roles in academic and clinical nephrology, including Deputy Editor of Kidney International and Nephrology Section Editor of the American College of Physicians' Medical Knowledge Program. Dr. Ross is a 2021 recipient of the American Society of Nephrology's Distinguished Leader Award.
Dr. Ross completed his MD at New York University, residency at Duke University, and Nephrology Fellowship at Mount Sinai. His research focuses on HIV-induced kidney diseases, mechanisms of renal injury, and clinical trials for diabetic kidney disease. He has pioneered studies on APOL1 gene variants and antiretroviral therapy effects, contributing to guidelines for managing kidney disease in HIV patients.
His research interests span HIV-associated nephropathy, innate immunity, and translational approaches to kidney protection. He leads NIH-funded projects on antiretroviral mechanisms and APOL1-mediated kidney injury. Clinically, he specializes in chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, and HIV-related kidney disorders.
Dr. Ross has authored numerous high-impact articles and serves as a principal investigator for clinical trials, including the INSIGHT network's HIV treatment studies. His work bridges basic science and clinical practice, addressing disparities in kidney disease outcomes.
