Michael J. Morgan is Professor of Visual Psychophysics at City University London, with prior academic appointments at the University of Cambridge (Experimental Psychology), McGill University (Psychology), University of Durham (Chair of Psychology), University College London (Psychology), and University of Edinburgh (Darwin Fellow in Pharmacology).
His academic credentials include:
- Natural Sciences Tripos, University of Cambridge (1964)
- Ph.D. from University of Cambridge (1969) for "A study of response learning in the rat"
- Sc.D. from University of Cambridge (1994)
His research centers on visual perception mechanisms, particularly Bayesian modeling of eye movements, spatial remapping, and visual statistics. This work bridges experimental psychology and computational neuroscience, examining how humans process visual information through psychophysical methods and statistical modeling.
He has secured major research funding as Principal Investigator:
- Leverhulme Trust #RPG-2016-124 (2016-2018): "A Bayesian Approach to the Control of Eye Movements in Human Subjects" (£122,047)
- Wellcome Trust #093280 (2011-2014): "Mapping and Remapping of Visual Space" (£314,000)
- EPSRC #EP/H033955 (2011-2014): "Efficiency of Visual Statistics" (£541,000)
Based at the Centre for Applied Vision Research, his laboratory focuses on quantitative models of visual perception and their neural correlates.
