Michael J. Leamy is a Professor and Woodruff Faculty Fellow at the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, where he serves as Director of Graduate Studies. His research focuses on nonlinear dynamics and computational mechanics in structures and materials.
Dr. Leamy's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan (1998)
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan (1995)
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University (1993)
His research spans nonlinear dynamics, computational mechanics, and hybrid propulsion systems, developing models to capture linear and nonlinear responses across macro-to-nano scales. He integrates nonlinear continuum mechanics, dynamics, electromagnetics, and atomistic mechanics to study vehicle accessory drives, hybrid vehicles, nanoscale materials, and metamaterials.
His recent publications (2013-2015) examine phononic crystals, nonlinear wave dispersion, and hybrid vehicle control. Key themes include wave scattering in periodic structures, nonlinear beam dynamics, and optimal control strategies for hybrid electric vehicles, bridging acoustics, structural dynamics, and automotive engineering.
Dr. Leamy has received numerous awards and distinctions:
- Editor-in-Chief for the ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics (2024-2029)
- Woodruff Faculty Fellow (2017-2022)
- Lloyd Hamilton Donnell Best Paper Award from Applied Mechanics Reviews (2016)
- ASME Fellow (2014)
- Lockheed Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award (2010)
- West Point Superior Civilian Service Award (2003)
- University of Michigan Distinguished Achievement Award (1998)
- Technion Postdoctoral Fellowship (1998)
He serves as faculty advisor for the EcoCAR Mobility Challenge, a GM- and DOE-sponsored competition redesigning Chevrolet Blazers for energy efficiency. His research is funded by Ford, GM, Ferrari, NSF, DOE, DTRA, ARO, ONR, Électricité de France, and ThyssenKrupp Elevator America.
He leads the Nonlinear Mechanics Lab, conducting computational and experimental studies of nonlinear behavior in automotive systems and nanotechnology.
