Rev. Michael J. Himes was a Professor of Theology at Boston College’s Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences from 1993 to 2021. His academic contributions centered on Systematic Theology and Ecclesiology, with a focus on Catholic intellectual tradition and modern theological frameworks. He held a Ph.D. in the history of Christianity from the University of Chicago, an M.Div. from The Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, and an A.B. from Cathedral College.
Fr. Himes’ research emphasized the intersection of faith and modernity, particularly through works like Ongoing Incarnation and The Mystery of Faith. He developed the influential “Key Three Questions” for vocational discernment, which shaped Boston College retreat programs. A gifted homilist and preacher, he delivered weekly noon Masses and was honored to preach at BC’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary Mass at Fenway Park (2004).
His awards include the Catholic Press Association Book Award (1994), Phi Beta Kappa Teacher of the Year (2002), and honorary degrees from multiple institutions. Fr. Himes collaborated closely with his brother, Kenneth Himes, co-authoring Fullness of Faith and sharing adjacent offices at Stokes Hall. He viewed his BC tenure as a vocation, deeply valuing the community’s commitment to intellectual and spiritual growth.
