Michael J. Burstein is a Professor of Law at Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University, specializing in intellectual property, innovation policy, and law and entrepreneurship. He served as Vice Dean from 2018–2023. His research examines how legal frameworks influence innovation ecosystems, corporate behavior, and government interactions. Prior roles include McKinsey & Company’s Knowledge Lead for the Growth Technology practice (2016–2018), a Climenko Fellow at Harvard Law School, and a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
Education: B.A. in Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry and Ethics, Politics & Economics from Yale University (1999); J.D. from New York University School of Law (2004, magna cum laude).
Research focuses on non-IP strategies for information exchange, patent markets, and innovation prizes. His interdisciplinary work bridges legal analysis with empirical methods to address challenges in tech startups and venture capital ecosystems. He has contributed to understanding the legal and economic drivers of collaborative innovation.
Professional trajectory includes appellate litigation in Washington, D.C., and service in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the Solicitor General. His career reflects a blend of academia, private practice, and policy influence.
