Michael J. Adang is a Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Entomology at the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences. He serves as Director of the Applied Biotechnology Degree Program and leads the Adang Lab, focusing on microbial biotechnology and insecticidal protein engineering.
- Research Areas: Bt toxin mechanisms, insect midgut receptors, genetic modification of insecticidal specificity, and resistance management in pest insects.
- Education: Ph.D. (1981) and M.Sc. (1978) from Washington State University, B.S. (1974) from Indiana University.
His work addresses critical challenges in agricultural pest control through interdisciplinary projects involving soybean and peanut crop engineering. The Adang Lab employs molecular biology, biochemistry, and phage technology to combat insect resistance to Bt proteins.
- Scientific Award: Recognized as a 2022 National Academy of Inventors Senior Member for contributions to biotechnology innovation.
Current research explores receptor differences in pest insects and develops novel strategies to delay resistance in crops like BT cotton and corn. His lab collaborates extensively within the University of Georgia and maintains the Bioexpression and Fermentation Facility.
