Michael I. Love

Michael I. Love is an Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics and Department of Biostatistics at the UNC School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also serves as the Associate Director of the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (BCB) PhD program. His research focuses on statistical and computational methods for analyzing high-throughput sequencing data, particularly RNA-seq, with contributions to software tools like DESeq2 and the Tidyomics ecosystem. Dr. Love’s work addresses challenges in functional genomics, including isoform-level allelic imbalance analysis, multi-modal data integration, and GWAS/QTL colocalization. He collaborates with groups such as the Mohlke Lab and Patro Lab on studies linking genetic variants to molecular phenotypes. His recent R01 grant from NHGRI supports advancements in long-read RNA-seq analysis frameworks.

Education: Ph.D. in Computational Biology from Freie Universität Berlin (2013), followed by postdoctoral training at Harvard School of Public Health. Teaching includes courses on computational biology and data communication.

Research Interests: Statistical modeling of genomics data, single-cell RNA-seq, transcript quantification, and open-source software development for bioinformatics. Key collaborations span cancer genomics, neurodevelopmental studies, and chromatin accessibility analysis.

Notable Achievements: Development of widely used DESeq2 for differential expression analysis, leadership in Bioconductor training, and mentorship of numerous doctoral students in computational biology and biostatistics.
