Michael Hofreiter is a Professor for Evolutionary Adaptive Genomics at the Institute for Biochemistry and Biology, part of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Potsdam. His research focuses on the genetic basis of animal adaptations and the impact of environmental changes on genetic diversity, particularly in Holarctic species like brown bears, mammoths, and spotted hyenas. He pioneers methods for analyzing degraded DNA from fossils and museum specimens, contributing to phylogenetics, population genetics, and ancient DNA studies.
