Michael Hathaway is Professor of Anthropology at Simon Fraser University, Director of the David Lam Centre for Asian Studies, and Guggenheim Fellow. His research examines environmental movements, Indigenous networks, and multispecies relationships across China, Japan, and North America.
Research interests include:
- Indigenous transnational networks
- Matsutake mushroom commodity chains
- Decolonizing scientific practices
- China-Japan environmental connections
- Multispecies ethnography
Current projects investigate Indigenous political networks across the Pacific Rim and epistemological alternatives to competition-based biological models. Hathaway's publications analyze how global environmentalism unexpectedly introduced indigeneity concepts to China and explore animal rights activism in pandemic contexts.
Awards include Guggenheim Fellowship with funding from Mellon Foundation, SSHRC, and National Science Foundation.
Research collaborations include Matsutake Worlds Research Group and Indigenous-majority teams examining knowledge decolonization.
