Michael Haldrup is a Full Professor in the Department of Communication and Arts at Roskilde University, Denmark, affiliated with the Visual Culture and Performance Design research group and the Centre for Tourism Research. His work bridges cultural geography, design studies, environmental humanities, and performance studies, focusing on embodied knowledge, heritage politics, and the planetary turn.
He holds a PhD in cultural geography and has held academic roles since 2000, transitioning into interdisciplinary communication/performance-design research from 2014. Key projects include leading the national 'Our Museum' initiative (2016–21) and co-founding FabLab RUC (2013), emphasizing maker culture and technology-arts collaboration.
Research interests include performance in heritage and tourism, creative methodologies, and transdisciplinary education. Notable publications include Performing Tourist Places (2004/2017), Experimental Museology (2021), and an upcoming edited volume on Art, Heritage and Performative Politics (2024). He has supervised over 10 PhD students exploring topics like museum communication, urban design, and queer heritage practices.
Collaborations span environmental researchers, artists, and activists, particularly around planetary and decolonial frameworks. His work emphasizes experimentation in museum practices, participatory design, and critical engagements with space and citizenship.
