Michael H. Ramage serves as a Reader in Architecture and Engineering at the University of Cambridge's Department of Architecture within the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art. He holds fellowships at Sidney Sussex College where he acts as Director of Studies, leads the Centre for Natural Material Innovation, and is a founding partner of Light Earth Designs.
His research specializes in natural material innovation for sustainable construction, focusing on low-energy structural systems in masonry, housing solutions for developing regions, and advanced engineered timber and bamboo applications. This work integrates architectural design with engineering principles to reduce environmental impact while addressing global housing challenges.
Ramage secures substantial research funding from the Leverhulme Trust, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Royal Society, British Academy, and industry partners. His dual expertise in architecture and engineering enables practical implementation of research through academic teaching and real-world design projects.
As director of the Centre for Natural Material Innovation, he oversees interdisciplinary research developing carbon-neutral building materials and systems, with current initiatives optimizing bamboo structural performance and low-energy masonry techniques for scalable sustainable construction.
