Dr. David Trujillo is an Assistant Professor in the CEES School of the Environment at Coventry University, UK, specializing in structural engineering with a focus on sustainable natural materials. He actively researches bamboo and timber applications for low-carbon construction, serves as Chair of INBAR's Bamboo Construction Task Force, and mentors PhD students in earthquake-resilient housing solutions.
His academic credentials include a PhD from Coventry University (2020), an MSc in Earthquake Engineering from Imperial College London (2004), and a Civil Engineering degree from the National University of Colombia (2000). He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from Coventry University (2010) and became chartered with the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2010.
Trujillo's research centers on structural applications of bamboo and timber to address climate change and urbanization challenges in developing regions. His work spans embodied carbon reduction, low-cost housing systems, earthquake engineering for temporary shelters, and sustainable material standardization. He emphasizes practical implementation through international codes like ISO 22156 and advocates for bamboo as a viable alternative to conventional materials in resource-constrained settings.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals three dominant research trajectories: mechanical testing of bamboo connections (screwed, bolted, nailed systems), development of grading methodologies using machine learning, and seismic performance validation against international standards. His work consistently bridges theoretical fracture mechanics with practical construction applications, particularly for disaster-prone tropical regions.
His most significant recognition is the Bob Fischer Memorial Prize (2010) awarded by the Institution of Structural Engineers for exceptional performance in professional examinations.
- Chair of INBAR Bamboo Construction Task Force (2015–present)
- Nominated expert to ISO TC 165 WG12 (2013–present)
- Member of TRADA Advisory Committee
- British Standards Institute committee member (2020–present)
- Guest Editor for Sustainability journal (2019–present)
Trujillo actively disseminates knowledge through high-impact media engagements including "Should we construct more buildings from bamboo?" (2022) and "Bamboo: 21st century steel" (2016), while leading international standardization efforts that directly influence building codes in Colombia, the Philippines, and beyond through his work with INBAR and ISO committees.
