Michael H. Goldstein is a Professor and Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences, serving as Director of the Robert S. Harrison College Scholar Program. He leads the B.A.B.Y. Laboratory, focusing on vocal learning and development in human infants and songbirds. His research investigates how social interactions, such as caregiver responsiveness to infant babbling, facilitate language acquisition and communication. Key areas include developmental psychobiology, statistical learning mechanisms, and cross-species comparisons of vocal behavior.
Research interests encompass cognitive and neural foundations of early communication, emphasizing the role of contingency in social feedback loops. Recent work explores how infant vocalizations shape caregiver speech patterns across cultures and the neurobiological underpinnings of communicative development.
Goldstein's articles reveal a consistent focus on developmental cascades linking prelinguistic vocalizations to language outcomes, with emerging themes in cross-cultural adaptability and computational modeling of learning processes.
He mentors students through the College Scholar Program and maintains active collaborations in psychology and neuroscience. Contact: michael.goldstein@cornell.edu.
