Michael H. Bernhard is the Raymond and Miriam Ehrlich Eminent Scholar Chair in Political Science at the University of Florida, Department of Political Science (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences). His research focuses on democratization, civil society, and post-communist political transitions. He previously served at Penn State University for two decades and held visiting roles at Warsaw University and Harvard University.
Education: BA from University of Pennsylvania, MA in Russian/East European Studies (Yale), PhD in Political Science (Columbia). Additional studies in Hungary, Poland, and Germany.
Editor-in-Chief of Perspectives on Politics (2017–2023) and co-PI of the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) project. Notable books include Institutions and the Fate of Democracy and The Origins of Democratization in Poland.
Research explores authoritarianism, populism, memory politics, and democratic backsliding in Europe and globally. His work bridges historical and comparative methods, emphasizing civil society’s role in political change.
