Dr. Michael Griener is a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) and an academic lecturer at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He received his doctorate in 2018 based on research conducted at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak, focusing on active line spectroscopy using a thermal helium beam. Since then, he has continued as a research associate at IPP, contributing to experimental plasma physics and teaching plasma physics courses at TUM.
His research focuses on the analysis of turbulent transport processes at the plasma edge, measurement of electron temperature and density using helium beam diagnostics, and the experimental validation of plasma edge models. He also contributes to the development and operation of fast piezo valves for local gas injection and neutral particle density diagnostics on ASDEX Upgrade.
Since 2025, Dr. Griener has led a junior research group funded by the Federal Ministry of Finance and Research (BMFTR), dedicated to validating physics-based plasma edge models. His work bridges experimental tokamak physics with theoretical modeling, contributing to the advancement of fusion energy research.
He is actively involved in teaching, offering lectures and tutorials in Plasma Physics I and II, seminars in plasma and fusion research, and laboratory internships on wave phenomena and plasma spectroscopy.
Dr. Griener is based at the Garching research campus and leads the working group 'Experimental Validation of Physics-Based Plasma Edge Models.'
