Michael Greenstone is the Milton Friedman Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago, holding joint appointments in the Harris School of Public Policy and the College. He serves as Director of both the Energy Policy Institute at Chicago (EPIC) and the Climate and Energy Institute (CEI). His research focuses on environmental and energy economics, public policy effectiveness, and development challenges, with notable contributions to understanding air pollution’s health impacts and climate change economics. Greenstone has held positions at the University of Chicago since 2000-2003 and returned permanently in 2014. His work emphasizes empirical methods and policy-relevant analysis.
He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2014), Fellow of The Econometric Society (2015), and National Academy of Sciences member (2024). His research spans topics like emissions trading systems, climate adaptation strategies, and the socioeconomic consequences of environmental policies.
Greenstone’s leadership in EPIC and CEI drives interdisciplinary collaboration to address global energy and climate challenges. His recent articles explore pollution market mechanisms in developing countries, the global electrification frontier, and the economic implications of climate change adaptation.
