Michael Goodyear serves as Associate Professor of Law at New York Law School (NYLS) and is affiliated with the Innovation Center for Law and Technology. His scholarship examines the dynamic interplay between intellectual property law and technological transformation, with emphasis on generative AI, deepfakes, online platforms, and traditional knowledge systems. A defining aspect of his work advocates for empowering historically underrepresented communities—particularly LGBTQ+ and Indigenous populations—through equitable intellectual property frameworks.
His research spans critical domains including:
- Copyright and trademark evolution in digital ecosystems
- Right of publicity in AI-generated content
- Indigenous traditional knowledge protection
- LGBTQ+ identity rights in intellectual property
- Platform governance and unfair competition
Professor Goodyear's publications appear in premier law reviews such as UC Davis Law Review, Arizona State Law Journal, and Harvard Journal of Law & Technology, alongside interdisciplinary outlets including Slate and Issues in Science and Technology. Prior to NYLS, he held dual roles as Acting Assistant Professor of Lawyering and Engelberg Center Fellow at NYU School of Law. His industry experience includes intellectual property litigation at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP representing technology leaders including Meta and Alibaba. He holds a J.D. cum laude from University of Michigan Law School and an A.B. from University of Chicago with honors in History and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.
