Dr. Michael Girardi is a Professor of Dermatology and Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Scientific Innovation at Yale School of Medicine. He serves as the Director of the Residency Program and Co-Director of the T32 Research Fellowship Program in Dermatology. Dr. Girardi is also the Evans Professor of Dermatology and Director of the Photopheresis Unit and Phototherapy Unit at the Yale Comprehensive Cancer Center and Yale-New Haven Hospital. He co-directs the Yale Cutaneous Lymphoma Group and the Yale Comprehensive Cancer Center's Immunology and Immunotherapy Program.
Dr. Girardi's educational background includes:
- MD from Yale University (1992)
- BS in Biology & Computer Science from Brown University (1988)
- Internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital (1993)
- Research Fellow at Yale University School of Medicine (1994, 1997)
- Residency at Yale University School of Medicine (1997)
Dr. Girardi's research focuses on cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), skin cancer development, and innovative treatment approaches. His laboratory has made significant contributions to understanding the genetic basis of CTCL, developing diagnostic criteria, and creating novel therapeutic strategies. He has pioneered research on the role of local immune cells in cutaneous carcinogenesis using genetically engineered mice and advanced imaging techniques. His work on biodegradable nanoparticles for skin cancer prevention and treatment represents a major innovation in drug delivery systems.
Dr. Girardi has published extensively in top-tier journals including Science (x2), Nature Immunology (x4), Nature Genetics (x2), and Blood (x4), with a Google Scholar profile showing an h-index of 45+, i10-index of 100+, and over 10,000 citations. His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on genomic analysis of CTCL, novel therapeutic combinations, and nanotechnology applications in dermatology and oncology.
Among his notable awards and recognitions:
- 2023 Yale Blavatnik Innovation Award for developing new treatments for T cell lymphoma
- Elected to the Association of American Physicians (AAP) in 2023
- Celebrated with Castle Connolly's Top Doctors Award annually from 2014-2023
- 2017 Zeligman Award from Johns Hopkins University for expertise in CTCL mechanisms
- The R. S. Evans Endowed Professorship (2022)
- Catalyst Award for Cutaneous Lymphoma Research (2022)
As Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Scientific Innovation, Dr. Girardi mentors numerous residents, fellows, and research staff. He co-directs the NIH T32 Research Fellowship Program, supporting the next generation of dermatology researchers. His laboratory research has been continuously funded by the National Cancer Institute for over 20 years. Dr. Girardi has also co-founded two Yale startup companies: Stradefy Biosciences and Devana Bio, translating his research into clinical applications. He holds more than 10 biomedical patents related to cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Girardi leads the Girardi Laboratory, which focuses on five major research programs: 1) Identification of genetic drivers of CTCL, 2) Innovation for CTCL management and treatment, 3) Novel strategies for skin cancer prevention and treatment, 4) Elucidation of Langerhans cells' role in skin homeostasis and carcinogenesis, and 5) T cell regulation of inflammation and tumor promotion. His laboratory collaborates extensively with other Yale researchers and maintains one of the largest centers for CTCL in the world.
