Michael Gehm is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University, where he also holds a secondary appointment in Physics. Currently serving as the Director of Graduate Studies, his career spans roles at Duke and the University of Arizona, where he was an Assistant Professor (2007–2013) and Associate Professor (2013) of ECE and Optical Sciences. He earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering (1992) from Washington University in St. Louis and AM (1998) and PhD (2003) in Physics at Duke.
Research Focus: Dr. Gehm’s work bridges computational and compressive sensing, electromagnetic/optical measurement systems, and mass spectrometry, with applications in X-ray imaging, planetary science, and rapid-prototyping of advanced electromagnetic structures. His contributions include asymmetric imaging techniques, miniature spectrometers, and GPU-based radiation simulations.
Scientific Recognition: A
- Fellow of Optica (2020)
- Fellow of SPIE (2022)
Academic Leadership: He has designed and taught courses such as ECE 543 (Statistical Optics) and ECE 542 (Holography and Coherent Imaging). His lab’s publications highlight hybrid X-ray systems, synthetic aerosol testing, and adaptive imaging architectures, reflecting his commitment to advancing sensor technology and security applications.
