Michael GOUJON

Michael GOUJON is a Professor at the University of Clermont Auvergne since 2022, serving as Deputy Director of CERDI (Centre d'Études et de Recherches sur le Développement International) and lecturer at IAE Clermont Auvergne - School of Management. Previously, he was a Lecturer at the University of Clermont Auvergne (2008-2022) and has been a FERDI Expert since 2005. He also serves as an associate researcher at CEMOI (University of Reunion) and has held various collective responsibilities including elected member of the Management Council of the School of Economics and the Council of the SEJPG Doctoral School.

Professor GOUJON's research focuses on development macroeconomics, global economic integration, development finance, institutions and governance, with particular emphasis on vulnerabilities in Africa, Asia, and Island Economies. His work has pioneered the development of indicators for measuring climate change vulnerabilities, sovereignty levels, and economic impacts of natural disasters in small island territories. He has conducted extensive comparative analyses of colonial histories and their impacts on contemporary economic sovereignty.

His recent publications reveal a strong focus on climate change vulnerability assessment, particularly through the Physical Vulnerability to Climate Change Index (PVCCI) developed at subnational levels. His work consistently employs quantitative indicators to examine small island territories, analyzing their historical colonial contexts, sovereignty determinants (particularly size and distance), and resilience to various shocks including climate change and economic disruptions.

Professor GOUJON actively supervises doctoral students across topics related to development economics, climate vulnerabilities, and African economies. His research has been supported by various institutions including FERDI, the French Development Agency, I-SITE CAP20-25, and the Global Development Network. He has led the 'indicators' program at FERDI (2009-2018) and contributed to major projects including Doing Research Assessment and studies on digital infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa.

As a key member of CERDI, Professor GOUJON contributes to research teams focused on small island economies, vulnerability assessment, and development indicators. His work with the MODEV and GPE master's programs has expanded educational opportunities in development project management and economic policy. His research collaborations span multiple institutions including FERDI, CEMOI, and international organizations working on vulnerability assessment in developing countries.
