Michael G. Haddock, M.D. is a Professor of Radiation Oncology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and serves as a Consultant in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center in Rochester, Minnesota. He holds leadership positions including Vice Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Co-Principal Investigator for the Mayo Clinic NRG Oncology cooperative group.
Dr. Haddock's research focuses on integrating radiation therapy with systemic therapy for gastrointestinal and gynecologic malignancies, with particular expertise in intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT). His IORT program is the largest in North America for nonbreast cancer indications, targeting GI, GYN, genitourinary malignancies, and soft tissue sarcomas. His work demonstrates that radiation dose escalation with IORT significantly improves local control, especially for previously irradiated patients who face high recurrence rates.
His clinical practice encompasses treating a wide spectrum of cancers including gastrointestinal malignancies (esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, hepatobiliary, colorectal, anal), gynecologic cancers (cervical, endometrial, uterine sarcoma, vaginal, ovarian, vulvar), and sarcomas (bone and soft tissue). He utilizes advanced radiation techniques including brachytherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, proton therapy, and intraoperative radiation therapy.

Dr. Haddock actively mentors residents and fellows in both clinical and research settings. His research program includes the Principal Investigator role for the Intraoperative Radiation Therapy Database (2001-present) and participation in numerous cooperative group clinical trials since 1994. His work with the Mayo Clinic NRG Oncology cooperative group continues to advance cancer treatment protocols nationwide.
Dr. Haddock leads the Intraoperative Radiation Therapy Program at Mayo Clinic, which has established itself as the largest program in North America for nonbreast cancer indications. His research continues to explore innovative applications of IORT, proton therapy, and mathematical modeling of radiation dose fractionation to improve outcomes for patients with complex malignancies.
