Michael Eschbaumer

Dr. Michael Eschbaumer serves as Laboratory Head at the Institute of Diagnostic Virology (IVD), where he operates as a Recognised Veterinarian Specialist in Virology with doctoral credentials (Dr. med. vet.). His role centers on national reference laboratory functions for critical animal diseases including Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), Swine Vesicular Disease (SVD), and Vesicular Stomatitis (VS).

His research expertise spans veterinary virology diagnostics, with emphasis on rapid detection methodologies for economically devastating livestock pathogens. This work directly supports international disease control frameworks and trade security through the IVD's reference laboratory status.

As Laboratory Head, Dr. Eschbaumer oversees diagnostic operations at the Südufer 10 facility on Greifswald's Insel Riems campus, collaborating with senior scientists including Prof. Dr. M. Beer and PD Dr. S. Blome. His leadership integrates field surveillance with advanced molecular characterization of viral pathogens.
