Michael Ellis Fisher is a British physicist, chemist, and mathematician renowned for foundational contributions to statistical physics, particularly phase transitions and critical phenomena. He holds a BSc and PhD from King's College London, becoming a faculty member there before moving to Cornell University in 1966. At Cornell, he served as a professor of chemistry, physics, and mathematics, chaired the chemistry department, and was elected to prestigious fellowships and professorships. Since 1987, he has been affiliated with the University of Maryland's Institute for Physical Science and Technology, part of the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. His honors include the Wolf Prize, Boltzmann Medal, and Royal Medal, among others. Fisher’s work has profoundly influenced condensed matter physics and interdisciplinary science.
- Education:
- BSc in Physics, King's College London (1951)
- PhD in Physics, King's College London (1957)
His research interests span statistical mechanics, critical phenomena, and interdisciplinary applications of physics. Fisher’s seminal papers have shaped theoretical frameworks for understanding phase transitions, and his interdisciplinary approach bridges physics, chemistry, and mathematics. His awards reflect recognition from global scientific institutions, including the Royal Society and National Academy of Sciences.
- Awards & Honors:
- Fellow of the Royal Society (1971)
- National Academy of Sciences Member (1983)
- Doctor Honoris Causa from École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (2012)
Fisher’s legacy includes mentoring notable scientists like his sons Daniel S. Fisher (Stanford) and Matthew P. A. Fisher (UC Santa Barbara). He resides in Maryland with his wife Sorrel, contributing actively to scientific discourse despite retirement.
