Michael Elftman, PhD, serves as Associate Professor of Immunology and Infectious Disease in the College of Medicine at Central Michigan University, concurrently holding leadership roles as Director of Course Operations and Director of Course Management. Since joining CMU in 2017, he has co-directed the Foundational Sciences of Medicine course for first-year medical students while teaching immunology across organ systems curricula. Previously, he was Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences at University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry (2012-2016).
His educational background includes:
- B.S. in Microbiology from Michigan State University (Lyman Briggs School)
- Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Hershey
Dr. Elftman's research bridges two critical domains: foundational immunology/virology and medical education scholarship. Early career work investigated dendritic cell function in norovirus infection and neuroendocrine modulation of antiviral immunity, while recent publications focus on comparative analysis of small group learning environments, professionalism development, and assessment methodologies in medical education. This dual expertise positions him at the intersection of basic science and pedagogical innovation.
Analysis of his publication trajectory reveals a strategic pivot from laboratory-based virology research (2003-2013) to educational scholarship (2020-present). His immunology papers established foundational knowledge in norovirus pathogenesis and stress-immune interactions, while recent medical education work addresses urgent challenges in virtual learning environments, demonstrating adaptability to evolving educational landscapes without abandoning scientific rigor.
His teaching excellence is recognized through:
- D and C Mridha Spirit of Teaching Award
with multiple nominations for Excellence in Teaching awards across foundational sciences and medical education leadership categories. This consistent recognition underscores his impact on curriculum development and student engagement.
As a key educational leader at CMU, Dr. Elftman shapes foundational medical training through administrative oversight of course operations while maintaining active scholarship in pedagogical innovation. His career evolution from basic science researcher to medical education specialist exemplifies meaningful adaptation to institutional needs while preserving scholarly productivity across distinct but complementary domains.
