معرفی
Michael E. Böttcher is a distinguished Professor of Marine Geochemistry currently affiliated with the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW) in Warnemünde, Germany, where he serves as Head of the Department of Marine Geology. He is also an Associate Member of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty at the University of Rostock and previously held a position as University Professor for Marine Geochemistry at EMA University of Greifswald (2008-2010). Böttcher is actively involved in editorial work as (co) Editor-in-Chief of Chemical Geology and serves on several editorial boards including Isotopes in Environmental and Health Studies and the Geomicrobiology Journal.
His educational background includes a Dr.rer.nat. from Georg-August University of Göttingen (1993), a Diploma from the same institution (1989), and a Pre-Diploma from the University of Hamburg (1986). He completed his Habilitation in Geochemistry at Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg in 2003.
Professor Böttcher's research focuses on Geochemistry and Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry, with particular expertise in marine systems. His work spans multiple disciplines including:
- Submarine groundwater discharge and coastal aquifer processes
- Stable isotope applications in environmental studies
- Baltic Sea biogeochemistry and sediment processes
- Mineral-water interactions and authigenic mineral formation
- Coastal peatland dynamics and carbon cycling
- Trace metal cycling in marine environments
His recent publication record demonstrates a strong focus on interdisciplinary coastal research, particularly examining the interface between terrestrial and marine systems. Böttcher has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of submarine groundwater discharge processes, using multi-isotope approaches to trace water and element pathways. His work increasingly integrates field observations with laboratory experiments and modeling approaches to address complex biogeochemical questions in coastal zones. A significant portion of his recent research examines the Baltic Sea system, with particular attention to the impacts of environmental change on coastal biogeochemical cycles.
Professor Böttcher leads the Geochemistry and Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry working group at IOW and has been principal investigator on several major research projects including BALTIC TRANSCOAST (DFG, 2016-2020), SECOS (BMBF, 2013-2016), EXCALIBOR (DFG, 2014-2016), and BIOACID-II (BMBF, 2012-2015). These projects have focused on coastal biogeochemical processes, submarine groundwater discharge, and the impacts of environmental change on marine systems.
