معرفی
Mark Schmidt is a Senior Scientist at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, affiliated with Research Division 2: Marine Biogeochemistry and the Marine Geosystems research unit. He has held this position since 2008, following academic roles at the University of Kiel, where he earned his PhD and habilitation. His research is centered on benthic biogeochemistry, fluid and gas chemistry, and marine sediment processes, supported by extensive fieldwork on international research cruises using ROVs, AUVs, and sediment coring systems.
- Diploma in Chemistry (1991)
- Dr. rer. nat. in Physical Chemistry (1995)
- PD Dr. habil. in Geology and Palaeontology (2005), University of Kiel
His research interests include stable isotope tracer studies, diagenesis, submarine groundwater discharge, methane seepage, carbon cycling, and offshore environmental monitoring. He specializes in gas chromatography and isotope-mass spectrometry, applying these to reconstruct biogeochemical processes in marine systems. His work bridges geochemistry, oceanography, and climate science, with a strong focus on environmental impacts and mitigation strategies.
His recent publications (2023–2025) reflect a consistent focus on carbon cycling, methane dynamics, and geochemical monitoring in marine environments, particularly in the Baltic and North Seas, Mediterranean, Red Sea, and South China Sea. Key themes include offshore freshened groundwater, pockmark formation, sediment resuspension effects on CO2 emissions, and the use of alkaline minerals for carbon dioxide removal. His work increasingly integrates modeling and field experiments for carbon capture and storage (CCS) monitoring.
While no specific scientific awards are listed, his leadership in numerous funded projects (BMBF, EU, TRC Oman, Helmholtz) and extensive publication record underscore his scientific recognition.
Mark Schmidt has led or co-led multiple research projects, including WP-leader roles in "Offshore Groundwater" (SOURCE), "SMART," and "Microbial Fe-corrosion," and PI roles in "SAABER Oman" and "Submarine Groundwater Discharge." He has been a senior researcher in major initiatives like GEOSTOR, Sea4Society, and APOC, and has secured grants from German, European, and Omani funding agencies. He has not advised any listed students, suggesting a research-focused role.
His lab and team affiliations are centered at GEOMAR’s Marine Geosystems unit, where he collaborates extensively on offshore monitoring, fluid-gas geochemistry, and international research cruises. He is actively involved in designing monitoring concepts for offshore operations and environmental impact assessments.
